I missed a deadline
Have you ever received a message like this?
“... what presentation? Oh crap. That presentation. The one I forgot to do... How am I going to get out of this one?”
Sorry for subjecting you to my internal monologue, but I hate these notifications. Whether it’s an anxiety-inducing message from my boss or a long-awaited reply from that girl at the bar, crafting the perfect message can seem so tricky. With your boss you want to sound professional and effective; with your crush you need to be witty and coy. How can you be all of these things at once?
Recently, I’ve been trying out our prototype of Mercury to handle these conversations with confidence, professionalism, and even – dare I say? – charm.
With Mercury, you can craft the perfect message in just a few minutes.
Mercury’s power
I’m always impressed by how well Mercury adapts to new situations. Of course, I usually adjust messages before sending, but the template that Mercury provides can make it much easier to get started.
Depending on how I want to sound, I recommend Mercury write in a specific style. Here, I ask it to help me discuss a pay raise. First I get a casual script, then a professional one.
Mercury does a pretty good job with a simple prompt like this, but to really unlock its power, you can craft your prompt to Mercury with more detail.
How to unlock even better responses
Let’s try to ask for this raise again, but this time, let’s give Mercury a lot of detail about what we want:
An easy way to consistently write great prompts is to remember REPS:
- Repeat: Repeat important ideas in different ways, especially when you’re describing something. Mercury will take into account all of your descriptions.
- Educate: Teach Mercury about your situation. Remember, Mercury is prepared to handle anything. Give it some background so that it can learn about your situation.
- Personalize: Personalize how you want Mercury to respond. Without any personalization, Mercury sounds more like a robot. How do you want to appear? How do you want someone else to feel? Simply ask the assistant to make you seem cool, calm, professional, or silly. Ask it to make others feel comfortable, relaxed, engaged, or nervous. You’ll be surprised how good natural language technology can adapt with the right instructions.
- Specify: Try to make your prompt specific to what you’re trying to accomplish. This isn’t google. You don’t need to use keywords. Just describe your situation and ask Mercury for help.
REPS is a convenient acronym because the more reps you get with Mercury, the better prompts you’ll start to craft.
