Polishing my Spanish

Remembering what I forgot

If you’re anything like me, you’ve forgotten a lot of what you learned as a kid. Most of it isn’t important; that’s why you forget it. But, there’s one topic I consistently have to relearn: my Spanish.

My mom was born in Chile, and chunk of our family still lives there. Every now and then, I go visit and try to keep in touch. But gaps in the trips have been getting longer, and now I realize that I haven’t been in 10 years. That’s plenty of time for me to forget a lot of Spanish.

Practicing with Mercury

Before I plan an expensive trip to Chile, I want to make sure I refresh my Spanish knowledge. I could spend lots of money on a tutor or a Rosetta Stone class (are those still around?), but instead I’ve decided to try conversing with Mercury in Spanish.

My first method of practice was to say something in my head in Spanish, then check with Mercury to make sure I got it right.

This was very helpful, but then I thought, “what if Mercury could correct and improve my Spanish directly”. So, I started asking Mercury to fix what I said.

That’s incredible. Not only can Mercury assist me in English, it’s helping me polish my Spanish to a professional level. But, can it do more?

Taking practicing languages to the next level

Brace yourself. Things are about to get really cool. Instead of simply using natural language processing to correct your sentence, you can have a real conversation in another language. Not only that, but Mercury can correct when you make a mistake and show you the right way to say what you were trying to do. It can even show you how a local in a particular region might say the sentence. Take a look at my conversation below:

Mercury can do this for any popular language. Aside form actually speaking with someone, this is my favorite way to practice.
